Chapter Thirteen

Rae flipped the sandwich over on the food truck’s small grill and smiled at the near-perfect golden color. Cheddar oozed out the sides, and the toasted cheese smell was familiar and warm. She’d had to teach herself how to cook—even setting a bagel on fire once as a teenager. The fact that she now made meals for a living that didn’t taste (or look) like charcoal was an accomplishment in and of itself.

Gus worked behind her in the cramped space, stirring the tomato-basil soup. There was a lull in the line out front, the first one they’d had since setting up for the Stroll. The night was clear and cold, with thousands of stars sparkling overhead. The Melt’s little food truck was all decked out in its holiday finery, which consisted of two strings of mismatched lights, and a tiny table-top Christmas tree beside the tip jar. This year she and Gus had decided to donate all their tips to the animal shelter. A good cause, she thought, since the shelter was so full this Christmas.

She looked up at the sound of laughter. A group of preschoolers was being pulled down the street in an antique sleigh that was hitched to a team of donkeys. Their parents looked happy, but frazzled, holding onto their snow jackets so they wouldn’t slip over the side.

Grinning, Rae waved, and the kids waved back. The entire town seemed to have turned out for the Stroll. Street parking was almost nonexistent, so people were heading up to the fairgrounds to park and walk from there. Food vendors were lined along the curbs and spilling into the park, where she could hear live music playing. Marietta was aglow, the shops along Main Street officially lit now for the Christmas season.

She’d seen nearly everyone she knew tonight, some wanting sandwiches, and others just stopping to say hello. Even little Jessica had come out with her mom, bundled up against the cold, and lured by the sweet promise of an ice cream sandwich from Rae and her uncle Gus.

But the person Rae had been hoping to see the most, hadn’t shown up yet. Even though she’d invited him. Even though she’d practically begged him to come, and she’d told herself she wasn’t going to do that. In the end, though, she hadn’t been able to help it. That kiss had made her see stars. Literally.

Now, as she looked over at the crowd of people passing by her food truck, she found herself aching at the thought. Griffin Cole could kiss, alright.

“Looking for anyone in particular?”

This from Gus, who gave her a little nudge from behind.

Her cheeks warmed as she concentrated on the sandwich, scooping it off the grill and onto a waiting paper plate. “Nope. Nobody in particular.”

“You lie, Rae.”

“I never lie.” But it was useless. Gus could read her like a book.

“Uh huh.”

She smiled, turning down the heat on the grill. “Mind your beeswax.”

“I just worry about you.”

“I know, but I’m totally fine.” Now, that was a lie.
